ABOUT ACUPUNTURE AND MOXIBUSTION:
Acupuncture is a method of pain relief and disease treatment, which has been practiced effectively for over two thousand years by Chinese healers and now by many in the West. Practitioners insert extremely fine hair-like needles at points along the body's channels of energy, called meridians, to balance the body's forces. To achieve optimal results it is key that the practitioner be highly skilled and that the appropriate needles are used. Science has proven that acupuncture can trigger signals in the nervous system and redefine pain messages to the brain. The therapy increases the brain's production of endorphins - the body's natural painkiller. It has become appreciated by Western medical science as a safe and effective treatment for minor to chronic pain and disease.
Moxibustion is another traditional Chinese medical technique that involves the burning of an herb - artemesia vulgaris, or ai ye in Chinese - commonly called mugwort, to facilitate healing. In fact, the Chinese character for acupuncture, literally translated, means acupuncture-moxibustion. The purpose is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of Qi (energy), and promote general health. It is used on patients who have a 'cold' or 'stagnant' condition. Moxa is burned near trigger points to expel 'cold' and to warm the energy meridians that run throughout the body, thereby stimulating the flow of blood and energy.
In Western medicine, moxibustion has been successfully used to turn breech babies into a normal head-down position prior to childbirth. In 1998, a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that up to 75% of women suffering from breech conditions before childbirth had fetuses that rotated to the desired position after receiving moxibustion at an acupuncture point on the bladder meridian. Other studies have shown that moxibustion may reduce the symptoms of menstrual cramps when used in conjunction with acupuncture. Because moxibustion can bring such powerful results practitioners in the United States must have an acupuncture license to perform moxibustion.
